Literary devices used by the authors in the two books The two books have employed distinct literary devices. Sylvia’s books have some quite interesting characters. Esther Greenwood is the protagonist in the story who became mentally unstable. She became tormented after the death of her father coupled with the feelings that she does not fit into culturally acceptable task of womanhood and subsequently attempt to commit suicide (Bryfonski, Dedria 45). Doreen is the other conspicuous character in the story and she portrays a rebellious young lady. Esther the main protagonist finds Doreen’s confident personality very enticing albeit troublesome. The theme of insanity in the story is demonstrated more in by the character named Joan who apparently is an old friend of Esther. She joined Esther in the asylum but eventually commit suicide. There are two doctors that Esther encounters while at the asylum. Doctor Nolan is a beautiful and caring lady. Doctor Gordon is the very first doctor Esther encounter in the asylum. The story depicts him as self-obsessed and somehow patronizing. Ken Kesey in his book One flew over the cuckoo’s nest also has some interesting characters. One of the main characters is Chief Bromden who is the narrator who has been with the mental hospital since the conclusion of World War II. This character pretend to be deaf and mute and it is through this guise that he has been able to become privy to some to the dirtiest secrets in the ward. One of the most significant aspects that represent how male in society is demonstrated when McMrphy failed to lift a heavy shower room control that he had claimed he can lift and due to embarrassment remarked that, at least he tried. Amy Tan, Two Kinds Essay This storys main events take place in Chinatown throughout the 1950s and perhaps early 1960s. The main character of the story, who is also the protagonist, is the author herself: Amy Tan. The antagonist happens to be her own mother, who is always pushing Amy to discover some hidden talent and be someone she is not. There are a few other minor characters in the story. There is Lindo Jong (who she calls Auntie Lindo), who is a close friend of Amys mother. Waverly Jong is Auntie Lindos daughter, who is close to Amys age. Amys piano instructor, who she calls Old Chong, plays a small role in the story. Amys dad is included in the text, but does not play much of a role. In Two Kinds, the exposition is clear in the first couple of pages. The story begins by explaining that Amys family moved to America when she was a baby, in 1949. Her mother is clear in her goals: she wants Amy to be a child prodigy (a person with exceptional talent) and famous. Although in the beginning Amy seems accepting of her mothers goal, there are some undertones which are clear to the reader that her mother may go too far. Symbolism in literature might include visual or sound elements as well as language. Amys piano was the main symbol of this story. In the end of the story, the fact that she had it tuned and actually sat down to play shows us that she really cared about her mother-and the piano-after all. The songs that she plays at the end are also a symbol of the story, itself. She mentions playing two songs. The first is titled Pleading Child, and the second one: Perfectly Contented. These are songs that she had played when she was a child. She notices for the first time, after all of these years, that these two songs are actually two halves to the same song. The song represents Amys life. This is how the story ends. We get a pretty good idea of what Amys story is about and the theme behind it. She regrets not trying her best, and the way she has taken her mother for granted in her life. A strong message like this makes us reflect on our own lives and relationships with the ones we love. Amy constructs the story in a way that makes the plot flow, and we are interested in what will happen to her next. Some of us may even feel like she is too hard on the protagonist-her mother. The ending resolves these feelings, because we discover she feels this, too.

The American Dream has always been rooted in the idea that no matter what circumstances a person is born into, that person can rise to the top with hard work and seized opportunity. This dream--the underlying belief of American exceptionalism--is the reason millions of immigrants have come to the U.S. over the years. In 1932, Aldous Huxley, a Briton, published a book that flew directly in the face of that great American ideal. In Huxley's Brave New World, citizens are pre-destined before birth to a certain socio-economic group and conditioned during early life into accepting that status. While that idea horrifies its American readers, their expectations for their own socio-economic mobility are steadily drifting away from the realities of life in the U.S, and the consequences for this shift could be severe. Americans believe they live in an upwardly mobile society that is the opposite of Brave New World's predestined existence, but perhaps that opposite is, in reality, a mirror image . Huxley's Brave New World fast-forwards several centuries to an imaginary civilization that has moved past traditional birth and child-rearing by parents. This society takes the guesswork out of life in order to promote consumerism and reduce social unrest. There are five inescapable castes: Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Episilons. Caste is crucial because a citizen's work is progressively more menial the farther down the hierarchy he or she sits. In this civilization, fetuses are kept in bottles and manipulated with chemicals to be prepared mentally and physically for the jobs that have been assigned to them. There are a lot of details that go into building a monument, but I feel that those are the most important to think about. If those three things are completed properly then the monument will most likely be successful. First of all, when building a monument, you must consider its historical ignificance. If a monument is built and it has no historical magnitude, no matter how cool it looks or where its built, nobody will care that much about it. One of the main reasons why people go to see monuments is so that they can learn something or see something that theyre interested in. People wont want to learn about or see something that has no historical significance. For example, the Lincoln Memorial is a very famous monument. One of the main reasons for that is because of how historically significant President Lincoln was and still is today. People go and see that monument because of the significance of it and how they feel when they are there. Since President Lincoln is so important to our country it makes his monument much more successful. Secondly, if you build a monument you have to make it extraordinary and authoritative. If you build a monument that isnt very cool to look at and doesnt in a sense take authority compared to he things it is around it will not be successful. A good example if this is the Statue of Liberty. The reason the Statue of Liberty is such n incredible monument is because of how extraordinary and authoritative it is. Its size, color, look, and what it means to our country are all factors of why it is such a good memorial and is loved by so many people. They couldVe made it a lot smaller, but they didnt. That decision, among others, helped make the Statue of Liberty as famous as it is today. As you can see, making a monument extraordinary and authoritative is very important. Last of all, an important thing to consider when building a monument is the place hat it is built. You cant build a monument in a place that nobody ever goes or sees. How will it ever get noticed? You also have to consider if the monument will be more appreciated on different places. For example, you dont want to build a monument of a famous Chinese leader in Egypt. The people there wont care about it near as much as the people in China would care about it. If the monument is about something spiritual, you should build it in a place where you can feel the sprit. Not in a loud and oisy place that will always be interrupted, but in a quite and peaceful place. People should know where it is but it shouldnt always be noisy, thats for sure. So as you can see, the place that you put the monument is Oh so very important. In conclusion, when building a monument you must consider all three of these elements.
